Focuses on winning and life lessons for youth athletes

September 2008, Arvada, CO - Edge Soccer Club has established a partnership with Positive Coaching Alliance (PCA) to ensure a positive, character-building experience for all youth athletes in Edge programs. PCA (www.PositiveCoach.org), a Stanford University-based non-profit organization, conducts workshops for coaches, organizational leaders, and parents involved in schools and sports organizations serving five-to-18-year-old athletes. PCA also provides workshops for high school athletes.

"Working with hundreds of youth sports organizations around the United States, PCA has developed practical tools and guidelines to help youth athletes, their coaches and parents get the most out of sports," said Keegan Miller, Director of Developmental  Programs with Edge Soccer Club.  "We recognize the tremendous opportunity for character-building sports offers for today's youth, so we are embracing PCA's Double-Goal CoachTM model, where winning is one goal and teaching life lessons is the second, more-important goal."

"We are delighted to partner with Edge Soccer Club," said PCA Executive Director Jim Thompson. "Together, we'll strive to help their youth athletes take a positive approach to pursuing victories in athletic competition and in life."

In the past 12 months, three coaching workshops have been conducted so far with Edge Soccer coaches with more than 150 coaches attending.

By Kevin Marples

Referees are a key part to the success of soccer games each weekend around the state of Colorado and your help is needed to allow each weekend to succeed out on the fields.  Each year referees must recertify to continue their certification and make them eligable to referee games.  Every year a referees registration expires on December 31st.  Below please find a few frequently asked questions along with answers.

  • Q: How old do I have to be to become a referee?
  • A: We suggest that individuals be at least 11 years old before taking a referee class.
  • Q: How do I check my current registration status with the United States Soccer Federation (USSF) and know if I need to recertify this year ?
  • A: Contact the Colorado Referee Registrar by email coloradoregistrar@coreferees.org

  • USSF Bridge Course: Referees who have been certified for one year as a USSF Grade 9 Referee, individuals qualify to take a USSF Bridge which will upgrade them to a USSF Grade 8 Referee as well as recertify them for the next year.

U13 Boys - Champions in Vail

EDGE Black wins a thriller

The U13 Boys EDGE Black team travelled to beautiful Vail Valley this past weekend to participate in the Vail Challenge Cup. This proved to be a great opportunity to get some additional experience mid-season and provide additional ‘team-time’ amidst the autumn colors of the Colorado mountains.
The U13 age group included teams from Denver, Boulder, Colorado Springs, and Durango. On Saturday, EDGE Black took on a strong team in Rush Pikes Peak Swoosh – pulling away in the second half to a 4-1 victory. In the afternoon contest, the team defeated a Durango team 10-1. As a result, the team only needed a tie in their Sunday morning game in order to move on to the Championship game. Facing a physical Real team on a rough field made for some interesting moments; however, they came away with the 0-0 draw needed to move on to the finals – just over an hour later.
In the Championship game, EDGE faced a strong Vail team playing on their home turf. To date, Vail had not lost in the tournament, or in league play. Vail jumped out to a 2-0 lead on a strong shot against the grain from the 18 and a quick shot when the ball found an open forward on the weak side of the play.
Momentum was clearly in Vail’s favor until EDGE placed a short cross high in the back of the net from just outside the penalty box. EDGE was down 1-2 at half, but had managed to gain back the momentum. The second half saw more end-to-end action until EDGE was able to work the ball past Vail’s defense and make a nice cross from the right side to a streaking forward down the middle. The 2-2 tie held until the end of regulation.
During both of the five-minute, golden goal overtimes, neither team was able to find the back of the net as pressure mounted. Both coaches made their final substitutions to insure they had the proper lineups on the field for the penalty-kick (PK) shootout.
Following the coin toss, EDGE sent their first shooter to the PK stripe. He calmly placed the shot in the back of the net. Vail responded. It wasn’t until the third set of shooters that someone missed – Vail hit the crossbar. After the fourth set of players made their shots, EDGE’s fifth shooter could win the game. By now the field was lined with parents, players from other teams, and interested spectators as word spread of the Championship shootout. Amidst the pressure, EDGE’s final shooter placed the ball high in the net for the final goal.
Some powerful memories not soon, or ever, forgotten. Congratulations EDGE Black!

Swede Women's Soccer Off and Running with '09 Recruiting Class

Coach Steve Moore's Swede Women's Soccer team hasn't wasted any time in getting started on the team's 2009 recruiting class, having already signed 2 players.

Lindsey Pfenninger of Arvada, Colorado and Shannon SIngleton of N. Las Vegas, Nevada each signed letters of intent this summer to join the Swedes in the Fall of 2009.

Pfenninger will come to Bethany having played her freshman and sophomore years at Ralston Valley HS, as well as having played club soccer most recently with Colorado Edge.  She has played primarily as a sweeper, but has also seen a good share of time recently as an outside back.  "I've been more and more impressed with Lindsey each time I've seen her play," states Coach Moore.  "I think every time I've seen her play from the first time I saw her, to her recruit visit, to her club tournament this summer, she's gotten better and better...which makes me very excited to see where she'll be when she shows up to camp next August.  We'll be graduating 4 starting defenders over the next 2 years, so bringing in players of Lindsey's ability now is going to be imperative to our continued success defensively." Pfenninger is the daughter of Brad and Kathy Pfenninger, and will join her sister Ashley, who's currently a sophomore, here at Bethany.  She plans on majoring in Criminal Justice.
